On the night of May 29, 1914, the St. Lawrence River became the site of Canada's worst-ever marine disaster. The luxury cruise ship Empress of Ireland, with 1,477 aboard, sank after colliding with the Norwegian coal ship Storstad. The Empress was only hours into a passage to Liverpool.
