The sinking of the Princess Sophia taking the north down with her
In 1918, the steamer Princess Sophia left Alaska for Vancouver, but during a storm she ran aground on Vanderbilt Reef - there were no survivors. Tracing the stories of many of the 353 aboard the Sophia - how they had gone to the north, what they did there, why they were leaving that fall, Coates sheds light on a little-known aspect of our history.
