Marie-Anne : the extraordinary life of Louis Riel's grandmother
In 1807 Marie-Anne Lagomodière became the first white woman to make the canoe voyage from Quebec to the Red River Valley in western Canada as she accompanied her coureur du bois husband. She settled into the life and learned Cree and Ojibwe. She would be grandmother to Louis Riel.
