Painted in oil onto canvas paper, this landscape study shows a view of the Black Strap Provincial Park, a short thirty-five-minute drive south of Saskatoon, home to the artist Norm Dallin. Working in watercolour, acrylic, and oil, Dallin began exhibiting his paintings in the late 1960s. Over his long career, he successfully balanced work as a freelance artist with his work as a carpenter. For many years, his subject matter focused on the prairie landscape, using a loose, impressionistic brush stroke. In retirement Dallin gave up his large studio and began working on his kitchen table. This affected his choice of subject matter, materials and scale of work. He changed his approach to painting from working in large-scale landscapes to creating small, brightly coloured studies of interior spaces. Born in Saskatoon, Norm Dallin (1948 - ) began his study of art in 1969 in Toronto, at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University), and in 1969-70, at Three Schools of Art (later known as the “New School of Art”). Moving back to Saskatchewan, Dallin established his studio practice, and continued his studies in art informally. He attended the Emma Lake workshops in 1979 with Friedel Dzubas and John Elderfield, and in 1982, with Stanley Boxer and James Wolfe. Dallin’s work has been exhibited nationally, and is held in private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa), MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina), ReMai Modern (Mendel collection, Saskatoon), University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon), Art Gallery of Windsor, and Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Edmonton)
