This cold prairie scene, complete with hints of dry grass and soil peeking through the snow, demonstrates the artist’s ability to capture the essence of the landscape without overworking the details. A master of watercolour, Savage allows his paint to flow across the sky while controlling where it “bleeds” into the land below. Savage describes his approach in terms of capturing the relationship between sky and earth: “the paintings are as much about the moving sky and the changes it brings as they are about the stable constant land.” A painter, photographer and printmaker, Savage is best known for his small-scale landscapes which deftly capture the light and mood of the open prairie. Harry Savage (1938- ) was born in Camrose, Alberta. He graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts) in 1961, and the Brooks School of Photography (Brooks Institute) in Santa Barbara, California in 1962. Best known for his landscape painting, Savage also works in photography and silkscreen printmaking. In addition to his studio practice, he was an active member of Edmonton’s cultural community, teaching for two decades at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Extension, and in 1973, co-founding the artist-run gallery, Latitude 53. Savage’s work has been shown nationally and is held in public collections such as the Art Gallery of Alberta, the University of Calgary, the Burnaby Art Gallery, and the Alberta University of the Arts. In 1977, Savage received the Edmonton Achievement Award for Arts in recognition of his work. He currently lives and paints in British Columbia."
