This is an early work by Enright but it shows the bright colours and pattern contrasts that he has become well known for in his painting. During his time in Saskatchewan, Enright was part of a generation of young artists working in Abstract Expressionism along with painter and clay artist Donovon Chester, painter Bob Christie, and sculptor Douglas Bentham. In 2004, Enright became paralyzed in an accident. He regained use of his hands, and with the help of studio assistants, continues to paint. Living in New York City, Enright describes finding his inspiration in the tempo and rhythms of the city, and in working with colour. Clifford Enright (1934- ) was born in the United States. After serving in the navy (1955-59) he studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. (1960), and Marietta College in Ohio (1961), before transferring to the American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned his MFA (1966). Enright moved to Canada and taught for several years in the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus (now University of Regina). During these years, Enright attended the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops taught by Michael Steiner (1967) and Frank Stella (1969). In 1970, Enright moved to New York City. There, in addition to his studio practice, he taught drawing, painting, and pastels at the Stuyvesant Adult Center, retiring in 1999. Enright has exhibited artwork internationally, and his paintings are held in the collections of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Regina Public Library, MacKenzie Art Gallery, University of Regina, and Rutgers University (New Jersey, USA)."
