Rory Block is the most celebrated living female acoustic blues artist. This recording kicks off Power Women of the Blues, Rory Block's latest series of recordings dedicated to blues pioneers. Bessie Smith was rightly called 'The Empress of the Blues' for her 160 classic recordings between 1923 and 1933. Block's unique acoustic blues interpretations of Bessie Smith's material remind us how powerful the songs are and how talented Block is.
