In her lively social history of American women and aging, Gail Collins illustrates the ways in which age is an arbitrary concept that has swung back and forth over the centuries, and gives women reason to expect the best of their golden years. Collins is the first woman to have held the position of editor of the NYT editorial page. Her visibility has increased with the twice-weekly Op-Ed column she now writes for that paper.
