The year is 1955 on the Canadian prairie. Ten year old Dot Cleaver copes with the loss of her mother, her silent father and her many unanswered questions. The teacher of her one-room school and a mail-order housekeeper step up to offer hope, as Dot makes her way through the cold Saskatchewan winter.
