Orphaned 15-year-old RubyLyn lives with her harsh uncle in poverty-stricken Nameless, KY. It is the summer of 1969 and her days are spent working in tobacco fields and doing all the housework. She has a secret bond with Rainey, the black field hand, but local prejudice makes a relationship dangerous. Her only solace is drawing, and she dreams of escaping Nameless to become an artist.
